History

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Ilorin is a renowned academic institution that was established in the year 2009/10. Within this faculty, the Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry holds a significant position. The primary objective of the department is to offer comprehensive education, engage in cutting-edge research, and contribute to the community through various services.

The Department is staffed by a diverse group of professionals (both national and international), including academicians, researchers, and support personnel. The academicians primarily consist of professors, associate professors, and lecturers who are responsible for teaching, carrying out research, and guiding students in their pursuit of knowledge. Support personnel encompasses administrative staff, and laboratory technologists who ensure the smooth functioning of the department and its facilities. Collectively, these staff members work together to foster an environment conducive to learning, research, and innovation in the field of pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry.

The department was first headed by Prof. Moji Taibat BAKARE-ODUNOLA (2012-2017) after by Dr Sa’ad Toyin ABDULLAHI (2017-2022). The Department is currently headed by Ngaitad Stanislaus NJINGA (Associate Professor) since 2022. The following staff have headed the Departmental Examination position: Dr. Sa’ad Toyin ABDULLAHI (2012-2017, 2020), Dr. Ngaitad Stanislaus NJINGA (2017-2020, 2021-2022), Dr Oluwasegun Ibrahim ENIAYEWU (2022 to 2024) and Dr Sanusi ABDULRASAK who took over from Dr. Eniayewu.

The department started a Masters degree (M.Sc.) program in 2019 and two years after, we started a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Postgraduate diploma (PGD) in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal chemistry.

The Department engages in a wide array of research areas which include drug design and development, medicinal chemistry, natural product chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, and analytical techniques for drug quality assessment. The Departmental staff collaborates with other staff to explore innovative solutions in drug discovery, therapeutic applications, and the development of novel pharmaceutical products, contributing to advancing healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences.

The faculty’s dedication to academic excellence and professional development has allowed it to produce graduates who are well-equipped to tackle challenges in the field of pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry. These graduates have gone on to contribute significantly to the pharmaceutical industry, research, and healthcare sectors both nationally and internationally.

In conclusion, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Ilorin, with its Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, has been steadily growing.
